Africa is internationally recognised for its long-distance runners, who consistently dominate the podiums in events such as the 5,000 m, 10,000 m, and marathon. Countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda have, for decades, produced world-class athletes who have become icons in major global competitions.
However, in sprint and power events (100 m, 200 m, hurdles, jumps, and throws), the continent remains under-represented at the highest level. Nations such as the United States, Jamaica, and various Western European countries currently lead in these disciplines.
One of the key reasons for this gap lies in the quality of athletics infrastructure, particularly training and competition tracks, which are still too scarce or outdated in many African countries.
